The Fish Market in Gdansk is located in the north-west corner of the Main Town, on the Motlawa River, near the former Teutonic castle. The market was established under the privilege of the great master Ludolf König in 1343. Initially, the Fish Market was open from the Motlawa side, but already in 1448 it was separated from the river by a wall, in which there was one gate (later called the Tobias Gate, now non-existent). In 1482 a new gate was built, today known as the Straganiarska Gate. It is located at the exit of Straganiarska Street, at Fishing Embankment 6 and it is the northernmost of the existing gates of the Main Town. From the Motlawa side, the gate is decorated with the coats of arms of Royal Prussia, Poland and Gdansk carved in stone.
