The spider species Araneus diadematus is commonly called the European garden spider, diadem spider, orangie, cross spider and crowned orb weaver.
The name comes from the characteristic white cross on the abdomen. Spiders build circular webs with a regular, radial arrangement of threads, and their diameter is up to 45 cm. This spider lives in all types of forests, meadows, gardens and parks, as well as farms and even buildings in cities. It lurks its prey from a nearby hideout or in the middle of a web. It stabs its victims with a venomous sting and sucks their contents (the venom dissolves the entrails). The garden cross is harmless to humans. In case of a bite, in extreme cases, a slight swelling and local tissue necrosis in the form of two small points may appear on the body.
