The Gdansk Crane was the largest port crane in medieval Europe. Its construction took two years, from 1442 to 1444. Two brick towers were built, and a wooden crane mechanism was placed between them. The structure is in the Flemish Gothic style. The Gdansk Crane performed various functions. The basic one for which it was created was the handling of goods - mainly beer, its tasks also included setting sails. In addition, it was used as a defensive fortification and city gate. Today, the Crane is a branch of the National Maritime Museum, which provides visitors with an exhibition showing the life of the port city in its heyday (16th - 18th century).
