Child of the Stars Photographed in Munnar, Western Ghats (June 2025), this image features the elusive Galaxy Frog (Melanobatrachus indicus), its star-like markings glowing against the forest floor. Endemic to the Western Ghats, one of the world’s richest biodiversity hotspots, the frog represents the region’s remarkable evolutionary isolation. Encountering this rare amphibian is a reminder of the fragile, hidden worlds that survive only within these ancient rain-soaked mountains.

The Gypsy with drops.
In this striking macro portrait, an insect emerges as a surreal landscape of texture, color, and form. Every hair, every facet of its compound eyes, and every delicate curve of its antennae is magnified into vivid detail, transforming the familiar into something almost otherworldly. Suspended droplets cling to its body like a constellation of tiny lenses, each reflecting light and amplifying the sense of immersion. Set against a bold gradient of fiery orange and golden yellow, the subject appears both fragile and powerful—caught in a moment that reveals the hidden beauty of the microscopic world. The image invites the viewer to pause and reconsider scale, to appreciate the intricate complexity that often goes unnoticed. This photograph celebrates the essence of macro photography: revealing extraordinary detail within the ordinary, and turning a fleeting encounter with a small creature into a dramatic and almost cosmic

Non-biting midge
A non-biting midge (family Chironomidae) rests on a grass leaf in the early winter morning. The leaf is covered with fresh water droplets formed during the chilly night, while the insect remains dry and still, waiting for the first warmth of sunlight. A quiet moment that highlights the calm and fragile beauty of winter mornings.

Amphipyra pyramidea
Amphipyra pyramidea Moths are one of my favorite species to photograph. I think they\\\'re spectacular, a mix of everything: large compound eyes, abundant plumage that\\\'s always difficult to retouch in post-production, but of course adds great visual appeal to the final result, a proboscis or snout usually coiled under the head, and, depending on the sex of the species, large bipectinate antennae (a double, comb-like structure) in the case of males, or thin, elongated ones in the case of females. Their behavior is usually very calm, especially in the early hours when they\\\'re not yet active. This allows you to take your time, set up the camera on a tripod with a good composition, without rushing, with some additional lighting and a background that completes the visual effect. A real treat! ? Tale of a Tail
This photograph offers an intimate, anatomically revealing portrait of the Indian Chameleon\\\\\\\'s prehensile tail (Chamaeleo zeylanicus), achieved through the precise use of backlighting. By placing the light source directly behind the tail, the skin is rendered translucent, dramatically highlighting the fine, granular texture of the scales and, most strikingly, the delicate, branching network of blood vessels beneath the surface. This intense illumination reveals the inner biology of the tail—a living, coiled helix, transforming it into a translucent sculpture that underscores the power of its prehensile function and the intricate fragility of the reptile\'s vascular system.

A green caterpillar caught by a tiny predator — nature in action
A giant caterpillar is caught by the tiny hunter Rhene flavicomans, a wasp-mimic jumping spider. Despite the massive difference in size, the spider shows extraordinary courage and precision, gripping its prey with perfect timing. This dramatic moment reveals nature’s truth — survival depends not on size, but on skill, instinct, and strategy.

The Jewel Eyed Guardian
The Jewel This mesmerizing macro portrait reveals an insect transformed into a mythical sentinel, its presence both delicate and commanding. Dominating the frame are its striking compound eyes—rich, ruby-toned domes encrusted with glistening droplets that resemble precious gemstones. Each droplet acts like a tiny prism, bending light into subtle spectra, enhancing the surreal, almost regal appearance of the subject. The symmetry of the composition draws the viewer into an intimate confrontation, as if standing face-to-face with a guardian of a hidden world. Slender antennae rise like ornate spires, crowned with suspended spheres of water that echo the jeweled motif. Beneath, intricate mouthparts and fine textures emerge in extraordinary clarity, revealing a level of detail invisible to the naked eye. Set against a luminous gradient of green and gold, the background evokes a sense of vitality and mystery, allowing the subject to glow with an almost otherworldly aura. This image celebrates the power of macro photography to elevate the smallest forms of life into icons of beauty and strength—reminding us that even the tiniest creatures can appear monumental when seen up close. Natal Cellar Spider --- ---- smeringopus natalensis The cool morning air at 5am made getting this image easier. Her babies kept still while my camera collected the images. Being ectothermic meant they where not going to be moving as fast if at all. I am like this with my morning coffee, it is like WD40 for my body. Maybe I am coffeethermic? This was a bucket list image for me and I am happy enough to add it to my Flickr account in high resolution and also I must say I have realized lately that the more I learn about arachnids the less I know about then. I\'ve shot this internal focus bracket while hand holding the camera laying down using my elbows as anchor points on the solid concrete below me. Fitted to CJ diffuser was an experimental front diffusion panel. It is very similar to the material I have been using with a few different characteristics. I will field test it a lot and see how I feel about it. 1/50th ---- F11 ---- ISO 200 ---- Flash @ 1/64 + 0.7 Location , Wodonga , VIC , Australia Helicon Focus Pro Adobe PS Topaz Labs Denoise AI ---- Olympus EM1 Mkii ---- OM SYSTEM M.Zuiko Digital ED 90mm F3.5 Macro IS PRO ---- Hand held Focus Bracket of 164 ---- Godox V1 O ---- CJ Diffuser V2 + CJ Lens Hood ©Craig Loechel Have a nice day

Nocturnal Huntress
Spiders from the Deinopis genus are true masters of the night. Instead of building the usual stationary webs, they craft a soft, wool-like net and hold it stretched between their front legs like a trap. When an unsuspecting insect wanders too close, these clever hunters spring into action—flinging their net with lightning speed to snare their prey in a perfectly executed ambush.

Vespula vulgaris
Vespula vulgaris, one of the most common social wasps in Europe. We often see it in summer hovering around tables and gardens, but we rarely look at it this closely. In the portrait, its \"mask\" is clearly visible: that black anchor-shaped marking on the front of its face is one of the keys to distinguishing it from other species of the genus. The antennae, mandibles, and every tiny hair on its face are specialized for a life of constant work within the colony.
