In the heart of Namibia’s Namib-Naukluft National Park lies Deadvlei, a dry white clay pan surrounded by towering red sand dunes. The dark, twisted trees that still stand here are camelthorn trees that died over 900 years ago. Once part of a green, living valley fed by the Tsauchab River, they were left to die when the river was blocked by shifting sand. Without water, the trees dried out under the burning sun. But the desert’s dry air and intense heat stopped them from rotting. Today, they remain like ghostly statues — silent and still, as if frozen in time — a haunting reminder of a lost world.
