Aloe dichotoma—also known as the quiver tree—is endemic to the southern highlands of Namibia. These trees got their name in the 17th century when Bushman hunter-gatherers were seen making quivers for their arrows from the bark of the branches. These unusual-looking trees can grow anywhere from three to nine metres tall, so it\'s easy to feel dwarfed standing beneath them.
In addition, you can also see dolerite rock formations that are between 160 and 180 million years old. At that time, the supercontinent Pangaea was breaking apart due to tectonic plate movement. Molten lava flowed through cracks in the overlying rock, and over millions of years, erosion wore away the softer sedimentary rock, exposing the harder dolerite beneath.
Walking around the landscape felt like being on another planet. And as if that weren’t enough to amaze us, we spent the night under the largest weaver bird nest I have ever seen—it was the size of our car, with hundreds of birds living in it. This is a place I will gladly return to someday.
