I visit Slovenia several times a year, and I’ve photographed St. Thomas Church many times before. One thing I’ve learned is just how quickly the weather can change here. What looks like endless rain and heavy clouds can turn into a beautiful afternoon within minutes.
That’s exactly what happened this time — but in a way I didn’t expect.
Sunset was getting closer, and I was slowly losing hope. Then the rain suddenly stopped, the wind picked up, and the clouds began to break apart. For a brief moment, sunlight flooded the hill where St. Thomas Church stands — and a rainbow appeared directly above it.
From that point, I had only seconds. I quickly worked out the composition and captured the scene before the light disappeared again.
Without the rainbow, it might have been just another photograph of a place I had photographed many times before. But sometimes, all it takes is a few seconds of unexpected light to turn an ordinary scene into something special.
