The Pale-billed Flowerpecker (Dicaeum erythrorhynchos), also called Tickell’s Flowerpecker, is one of India’s tiniest and most active birds. It is a regular resident across much of the Indian subcontinent, including in West Bengal’s Madanpur region where local birders and photographers have recently shared sightings of this species.
At only about 8 cm long, this diminutive bird is easily overlooked but unmistakable once noticed, especially because of its pale, slightly curved bill that gives it its common name. The plumage is generally plain brownish-olive above with a buff olive underside, blending seamlessly rather than showing sharp contrasts.
In Madanpur — a semi-urban and peri-green landscape near Kalyani in Nadia district — the species has been photographed feeding actively among blossoms and berry-bearing shrubs. These quick, darting movements are typical; unlike larger birds, flowerpeckers flit rapidly through tree canopies and bushes.
