I had recently moved back to my Hometown, Memphis TN. While the city is known for many historical and cultural significant events, the city is currently ranked as one the poorest and dangerous cities in the United States.
To bring a new perspective to the city, I chose one evening to go out and document the environment and those who inhabit the city. The town itself, plays a character in the series that is inspired by the film noir movement.
The frozen southern pole is a haven for wildlife. Whales, seals and penguins feast in the Antarctic’s southern ocean As in the Arctic, climate change is having a greater impact on the Antarctic than other parts of the world. The southern latitudes are warming three times faster than elsewhere and glaciers are melting faster than they form, raising global sea levels. Less sea ice means penguins have to swim further to find foodIt’s one of the smallest ocean creatures that we should perhaps be most concerned about. Krill are tiny crustaceans, a bit like shrimp, which are vital for almost all Antarctic life. They provide food for many other species, including blue whales, humpback whales and Adélie penguins.
Climate change is causing problems for krill as well. They depend on the edges of the sea ice for food and shelter. Less ice means fewer areas in which krill can thrive. And as the oceans absorb more carbon dioxide, the water is becoming more acidic and krill struggle to develop properly.
Let everyone do something while we still can and future generations enjoy that frozen beauty as we do...
I took this in Iceland while shooting in a geothermal area that was outgassing sulphuric steam. This shot was my favorite, so much suspense and story play into the seemingly perilous image. Don't worry, she's fine.
In spring majestic Greater Sage-Grouses could be found on sagebrush leks, their natural habitats, displaying their majestic shapes and forms in full spectrum. Unfortunately, species are endangered: sagebrush habitat is being damaged and destroyed by human activities and warmer temperatures, and the population of Greater Sage-Grouse decreases with it.
This was shot at Fortuna Bay in south Georgia island. It was absolute chaos and wonderfully beautiful to see all of these king penguins. I was able to frame single brown down covered juvenile in all the adult plumage penguins. The juvenile is waiting for one of the parents to return from the sea. Since the chicks tend to wander, the parents will spend hours searching before finding their chick.
Two bull moose spar in Grand Teton National Park. This looks like a violent scene but they are just 'playing', or so that's what they should be doing this time of year.
Actual fights over females during the mating season can be very sudden and violent. Once mating season is over however, the males quiet down and hang out in groups.
These two were still quite feisty and the smaller bull decided to charge the bigger bull from the side!
Paper wasps are vespid wasps that gather fibers from dead wood and plant stems, which they mix with saliva, and use to construct water-resistant nests made of gray or brown papery material. Some types of paper wasps are also sometimes called umbrella wasps, due to the distinctive design of their nests.
Found this paper wasp (looked like a coarse-back red paper wasp but not sure) resting on a barrel pot last evening. Seemed in no rush to take off and wasn’t bothered much as I approached it. It did move a bit but nothing overly dramatic. After a while it started chewing on what looked like a tiny bug (zoom in and you’ll be able to see) - guess I walked in at dinner time! After a couple minutes, started cleaning its eyes and face with front legs and then leg itself by licking on it. That’s the moment I have captured here.
Photographed hand held with manual focus, diffused flash; 1:1 magnification ~20% crop; PP in LR5. The vertical angle did not allow for an appealing background though. Not the best composition but nonetheless an interesting subject and experience all together.
Clinging for life in the high waters of lake Wanaka and standing in its proud solitude, this tree is one of the most photographed trees in the world.
Сражающееся за жизнь и гордо стоящее в одиночестве среди разлившихся вод озера Ванака, это новозеландское дерево - одно из самых фотографируемых в мире.
The elephant herd has spent the day grazing and cooling in the swamps of Amboseli. As late afternoon approaches, they head across the dry riverbed back to the hills for the night. Mount Killamanjaro serves silent witness as they pass.
These beautiful ladies in the picture are in the process of making rice for us(farming). This is a very difficult method called transplantation method of cultivation and the entire process is done by hand. But at the same time, it gives some of the highest yields. Not everybody sees this.
I came upon this Porcelain crab living on the underside of an Anemone. Although most critters would get stung by the anemone these critters have an agreement as long as the crab keeps up his end of the deal. I used a 60mm dry lens lens to get close enough to capture them but yet not disturb them.
- The rating of photographers by countries and cities is based on the three best photos of the author and their relative position in each separate nomination. Rating in the nomination "Mobile Photography" is taken into account to a lesser extent for rating formation. The list shows one photo of the author with the best rating.
- Only those photos have been published in the list that passed the second stage of voting.
