this photograph was taken at Fraser’s Hill, Pahang, while exploring a quiet bamboo pathway deep within the forest. During the walk, I heard a faint but distinctive pecking sound coming from the bamboo. By carefully tracking the sound, I located a Rufous Piculet actively making a hole in the middle of a bamboo tree.
The moment was especially meaningful to me, as this species was a personal lifer that I had missed many times before. The bird only perched briefly on a clean branch, giving me just a few seconds to compose and capture the image before it disappeared downhill into an area with no accessible pathway, making any reshoot impossible.
The image was captured instinctively, using my camera settings wisely within seconds, relying on experience rather than repeated attempts. The natural perch, soft forest light, and calm background came together momentarily to create a rare and unforgettable frame of this elusive species in its habitat.
