The Purple Swamphen is a large colorful bird found in marshy wetlands across southern Asia. With its deep purple plumage, red bill and legs, it is easy to spot amongst reeds. Swamphens are omnivorous, feasting on a variety of plants and small animals. However, their favorite food is freshwater snails. Using their sturdy red bills, swamphens adeptly extract snails from their shells. They will also stomp on large shells to crack them open and access the meat inside. Freshwater snails provide these wetland birds with essential nutrients like protein, calcium, and phospholipids. Swamphens vigorously hunt for these slow-moving shelled prey in shallow waters. During breeding season, adult swamphens will also feed crushed snails to their growing chicks. The distinctive Purple Swamphen is specially adapted to take advantage of nutritious freshwater snails, a food source unique to its wetland home.
