White Rhinoceros (Ceratotherium simum)
Zimanga Private Game Reserve, South Africa
Near Threatened as per IUCN Red List
The white rhino is particularly vulnerable to poaching, because it is a large and relatively unaggressive animal with very poor eye sight. Poaching of the animal has gone virtually unchecked in most of Africa. Several highly organized and very profitable international poaching syndicates carry out their poaching missions with advanced technologies ranging from night vision scopes, silenced weapons, darting equipment and even helicopters.
Even with increased anti-poaching efforts in many African countries, many poachers are still willing to risk death or prison time because of the tremendous amount of money that they stand to make. Hence, many game reserves like Zimanga have been compelled to take the drastic step of de-horning rhinos to assist in their protection.
Photographing wildlife at the blue hour of the dusk is the dream of every wildlife photographer. I was lucky that the mother and calf came to drink at waterhole during this special time of the day. The colour of the blue hour sky was the icing on the cake.
