Tourism is one of Nepal’s fastest growing industries. It is a major source of foreign exchange, domestic product, income and employment. The basic concepts of ecotourism consist of nature conservation, involvement of local community, preservation of culture and sustainable use of natural resources. The term ‘ecotourism’ was originally defined as: traveling to relatively undisturbed or uncontaminated areas with the specific object of studying, admiring, and enjoying the scenery, its wild plants and animals, as well as any existing cultural manifestations found in these areas (Caballos-Lascurain 1988). Eco-tourism came into existence after the mid-eighties through the efforts of the conservationist to promote the sustainable use of natural resources and thereby to reduce the losses incurred in the environment through tourism activities. The concept of eco-tourism has evolved over the past decade from a reaction to mass tourism industry.
Thus, the prime aim is to promote or manage tourism with minimum undesirable environmental and socio-cultural impacts, and at the same to time to raise living standard of the local people.
