Exactly 20 years ago, my wife, a couple of friends and I went on a tourist trip to Cuba, with images of waving palm trees, white beaches, typical vintage cars, old ladies smoking cigars and portraits of Fidel Castro and Che Guevara in our minds.
Despite the fact that it was a wonderful trip, 20 years later I still had the feeling that I had largely missed the authentic feel of Cuba.
As a result, we decided to take another trip through Cuba in 2024, although from a completely different perspective and away from the well-trodden tourist paths.
This time, we did not stay in huge hotels but in so-called
“Casas Particulares” and we did not travel by car but by local taxi or bus in order to be as close to the people as possible.
It was an experience to remember. I was particularly charmed by the fact that people live outside on the streets, often in very poor conditions, but are nevertheless extremely hospitable.
With this series, I don\'t want to convey the typical image of Cuba, nor do I want to turn it into a historical document, but rather share a small piece of my feelings about how I experienced this vibrant street life.
