Madikwe hosts two packs of Lycaon pictus (IUCN: Endangered), also known as painted dogs for their striking, unique coat patterns. Each pack, numbering around 12–15 individuals, displays exceptional social cohesion, with coordinated hunting, communal pup-rearing, and strict hierarchies. Pack stability and access to large, connected ranges are vital, as habitat fragmentation, human-wildlife conflict, and disease remain constant threats. On a hot November day, the Bates Pack rest around a waterhole, bellies full as they play and explore. Their colourful coats mirror the red earth of Madikwe, offering a rare glimpse of one of Africa’s most beautiful and highly endangered predators.
