A herd of elephants, cows and calves, approached the waterhole at Madikwe with measured, purposeful steps. Dust clung to their skin, and scars told stories of lives spent in the wild. For millennia, elephants have followed these routes for water, guided by memory and matriarchs.

But their journey today is far from the same. Across Africa, shrinking ranges, fences, farms, and poaching press on their survival. Even here, within a protected reserve, each drink at the waterhole reflects the broader struggle for space and safety.

As the calves splashed and the adults drank with quiet care, the scene felt timeless. Yet the future of Africa’s elephants depends on safeguarding habitats, reconnecting fragmented landscapes, and fostering coexistence with people.
