The Dozo hunters’ costume is inherited and prohibited to be washed, it makes them immune to enemy bullets. The word “Dozo” means “he who returns home,” referring to a traditional hunter who comes back safely from the bush, usually after hunting game. They are the guardians of a privileged knowledge of Nature and Geography, invested with a very powerful spiritual character: medicinal plants, geography, mystical powers. Different Dozo brotherhoods can be found in Mali, Ivory Coast, Guinea and Liberia (Mandinga region). They are based on deep values where the rules of “justice and righteousness” prevail. That\\\\\\\'s why the Dozo hunters have been incorporated into the countries\\\\\\\' securities as self-defense groups. They were originally seen as a grassroots response to insecurity. Over time, their role as community guardians shifted. In recent years, particularly in central Mali, Dozo groups have militarized and become increasingly involved in armed conflict, especially due to the spread of jihadist groups. The weakening of government and the escalation of conflict have turned the Dozo hunters into armed militias.
