This is an old Bulgarian tradition, still celebrated today. It is an ancient ritual performed around New Year’s and during the carnival season. The participants, known as Kukeri, donning elaborately crafted masks and costumes made from fur, feathers, and other materials. Traditionally kukeri were only men, nowadays participate also women and even children. The purpose of wearing costumes and masks and performing special dances is to chase away evil spirits, bring good luck, and ensure a bountiful harvest for the upcoming year.
