Playful and messy

Tyrol region. During the annual "Krampus" parade, I noticed a little, charming girl, hiding behind the legs of the crowd. She was a little scared, but at the same time she was messing with the walking masked men. Her grimaces, her ginger plaits, freckles and the perfect matching green hat, reminded me of Pippi Longstocking! I had only a few seconds to grab my camera and to take this candid street portrait. "Krampus" is a horned, anthropomorphic figure, in Alpine folklore, who during the Christmas season scares children who have misbehaved, assisting Saint Nicholas. In traditional parades, young men ,dressed as "Krampus", participate and attempt to scare the audience with their antics. Such events occur annually in most Alpine towns.

This photo of Red Ghost Crab was taken at Tajpur sea beach of West Bengal, India. I always love to take a ground level shot of this beauty, but you know getting a ground level shot is not at all easy for this crab. Any vibration in terms of walking or roaming around can cause this crab to enter inside its den. I had to lay down from 4:30 AM to 6:30 AM to get this shot with full wet dress & place the camera just on a hat so that it won't get direct contact of water.

The Beauty of Pain: Portrait Of A Woman Who Just Lost Her Father

This photo is of an old friend, who had just lost her father to cancer hours before. I feel so many things when looking at this image. There is empathy, sympathy, confusion, and sorrow. I am honored to have been given the opportunity to photograph her is such a shocked state of mind. This is raw emotion. She was drinking, trying not to think about the fact that she just lost her father, all the tasks she needed to complete within the hours to come. It was real, very very real. I look back at it and feel this was probably the most impactful image I have captured to date. To lose a loved one, especially a parent, it’s almost everyone’s greatest fear. You sometimes see photos of people crying at funerals, but this, this was immediate aftermath. It’s rare to capture a moment like this. To me, this ultimately defines the beauty of pain.

Light and Shadow

Taken on a backpacking trip near Mount Rainier. I try to not "chase the light" and instead be there with a composition ready when it comes. Landscape photography is something I want to be calm and meditative. But, on this evening, I started heading to the viewpoint I had in mind a bit too late, and so I had to run up the ridge and then scramble to find a composition. The view was absolutely incredible, and definitely worth running for. The sun was interacting with the clouds in beautiful ways and lighting up the meadows below, with Rainier looming in the distance.

These two Sandhill Cranes could not fly any closer to each other. They resemble jet fighters in a synchronized flight pattern. Sandhill Cranes often fly in groups, but there is usually more space between them. Seeing two of them fly in unison, I tracked the birds across the sky to this point where they seem to overlap. Scent of Broqpa Broqpa is the name of a small village in Nepal. Ziesook first learned of it from a TV documentary, The Last Empire. Ziesook was moved by what she learned about a small village located at the end of the Silk Road in Nepal named Broq-pa. In Broq-pa, the symbolic meaning of flowers is very special. In the Nepalese culture, flowers symbolize love, happiness, and appreciation for God. Broq-pa’s women are committed to growing flowers in their garden and decorate their hair with flowers every day. Ziesook wanted to incorporate this traditional symbolism from Broq-pa into her work and into her own personal life. She believes that this ephemeral medium, the flower, can carry a piece of happiness into people’s lives. Ziesook’s desire to share the spirit of Broq-pa with people through her artwork was the inspiration for her series, Scent of Broq-pa. The first work in the Broq-pa project began in 2016 with floral portraits of her twin daughters. Ziesook is continuing the series by exploring floral portraits of seniors, single mothers, people from multicultural backgrounds, and different age groups. Ziesook’s art form always involves communication with the subject. She strives to have her work project the individual’s personality. Ziesook’s goal is to create an intimate visual that incorporates multiple layers of meaning. By experimenting with various media and combining fresh flowers and dry flowers, Ziesook creates an image with characteristics that lie somewhere between photography and painting.

Red Fox in Snow

A series of Red Fox moments that I have witnessed in the Grand Teton National Park. In the snow-whitewashed place its like a splash of red all over. I got to see the most spectacular 'Mousing Leap' which is one of their typical hunting behavior. With their amazing hearing ability, foxes pin point the location of it's prey that are deep under the snow and surprise them with it's amazing dive into the snow. They also use Earth's magnetic fields to improve their efficiency in tracking their prey.
