Lava engulfing the road that leads to the Blue Lagoon spa and resort and moving above a snow-covered terrain, during the 3rd eruptive episode of the 2023-2024 eruption of Svartsengi volcanic system, in southwestern Iceland.
Yggdrasill - a top-down photograph of a lava flow taken during the August 2024 eruption of the Sundhnúkagígar Crater Row on the Reykjanes peninsula in Iceland.
This photograph shows a lava flow that bears a striking resemblance to a tree growing on a cliff, reminiscent of the sacred Yggdrasill in Norse cosmology. In Norse mythology, Yggdrasill was the mighty tree that connected the nine realms, symbolising the intricate connection between all worlds. Similarly, this 'lava tree' serves as a powerful metaphor for the connection between the molten inner world of the Earth and the surface world we inhabit - a vivid reminder of the deep, dynamic forces that shape our planet.
Photographing this scene was particularly challenging due to the intense heat radiating from the lava, which reaches around 1,200°C. The heat caused atmospheric distortions that slightly affected the sharpness of the image. These conditions were unavoidable given the extreme environment and are a natural consequence of capturing such a dynamic phenomenon.
– The rating of photographers by countries and cities is based on the three best photos of the author and their relative position in each separate nomination. Rating in the nomination "Mobile Photography" is taken into account to a lesser extent for rating formation. The list by country and city shows one photo of the author with the best rating.
– Only those photos have been published in the list that passed the second stage of voting.
– Only one strongest photo from each author is counted in the Best Photos ranking. Even if a photographer has several published works, only the highest-rated one is used to calculate their ranking position. As a result, the order of photos in the list may not match the author's final ranking position.
