the 2021 protests in Senegal are demonstrations that arose following the arrest on March 3, 2021 of one of the main opposition figures, MP Ousmane Sonko. He is accused of "rape and death threats" by an employee of a beauty salon in Dakar, which his camp denounces as an "attempt at political liquidation" on the part of current President Macky Sall.
On his way to court following his summons, Ousmane Sonko was arrested and clashes broke out between the police and supporters of the opponent. Demonstrations demanding the release of the opponent but also to denounce corruption and the high cost of living follow in the days to come and are violently repressed.
As of April 8, 2021, the toll established by the authorities shows 14 deaths on the side of the demonstrators.
