Kamchatka has some of the best brown bear habitat in the world. The highest concentrations of bears occur along streams and the banks of Kuril Lake in Kamchatka during salmon spawning. During the salmon push, the bears bulk up to the abundant nutrition found in the spawning salmon. The bears wade into shallow waters, hoping to pin a slippery salmon with their claws. At the peak of spawning, when there is usually a glut of fish to feed on, bears may eat only the most nutritious parts of the salmon (eggs and head) and leave the rest to scavengers. It is a rather swift process as they move from one fish to another. The South Kamchatka Sanctuary offers a boat ride to see parts of the Kuril Lake that cannot be accessed on foot. While the boat ride does offer a different perspective and experience, it is very challenging to freeze action from a bobbing boat and that too with a hand held prime lens. Here it is a game of nimbleness and presence of mind to overcome the technical odds to freeze a moment that vividly encapsulates the hunting feat.
