Kupala Night is a traditional eastern Slavic holiday which is celebrated on 23-24 June according to Julian calendar during a midsummer solstice.
I joined this celebration as and actual participant wearing a proper dress and ready to take in some new information on Slavic holidays. However, ut was my plan all along to make it a somewhat unique documentary shooting.
We weaved Kupala wreaths of wild herbs and flowers, played some traditional games, sang songs, meditated on regaining connection to our ancestry, performed a rite of getting chummy — kumovlenie, wringed tips of small birch branches making our wishes, jumped over a fire, threw our wreaths into the water and swam in the lake.
It might look like a cult, but it surely is not. Diving into this celebration allowed me to get a clearer idea of how people lived and how they were connected to the nature around.
