When I Visited Kongthong – The Whistling Village of Meghalaya...
Kongthong is one of the most interesting places I visited in Meghalaya. It is hidden in the Khasi hills and is famously known as the Whistling Village. But why exactly it is known as the Whistling Village? For generations, whenever a child is born here the mother composes a tune or a lullaby for him or her. This tune, along with their name, will become the identity of this child.
There are two tunes composed by the mother. The first one is a full-fledged song and the second is the short version of it. This song is locally known as ‘jingrwai lawbei’, meaning “song of the clan’s first woman”.
But this is not the only interesting part. This village is home to over 600 people living which means there are more than 600 unique tunes to be heard at one time! And while walking along the main road in this village, you will listen to a lot of hoots and whistles. The hoots are mainly used to call children to return home for dinner, or friends calling out each other while playing on the streets.
The origin of such a tradition is not known, however, it is believed that such customs have been in existence since the establishment of this village.
