Being a woman in sub-Saharan Africa is not easy. The statistics are overwhelming: Between 36 and 71 percent of women have suffered physical or sexual violence at the hands of their husband or intimate partner. Each year, around 3 million girls and women - some 8,000 girls per day - face the risk of female genital mutilation or cutting. It is estimated that between 130 and 140 million girls and women have undergone this practice, mainly in Africa and in some countries in Asia and the Middle East.
More than 13 million have HIV or AIDS. It is the only region in the world in which they suffer the epidemic more than men. In some regions the rate is three to one. Inequality is maintained even among married women. In addition, they take care of the sick, and are the last to receive treatment. One in 16 will die as a result of pregnancy or childbirth, according to the State of the World\'s Children report. In developed countries, the percentage is one in 4,000.
