The Bakar Tongkang is a celebration for a Chinese people who born in Bagan Siapi-api in Riau Province, Indonesia.
They not just came from many province in Indonesia, including Jakarta the capital City, but also from Singapore, Malaysia, Taiwan, Hongkong etc.
long time ago, 4 (four) ship, runaway from Thailand, and get lost in Indonesia Ocean. They tried to find a land, until finally they pray to their God to help them to find a land for them.
in one night, they saw a little light. and they followed that light until finally they found a land.
they called that light when they see it, is a light from God, God answer their pray.
but other story said, that lights was come from a fireflies. but yes.,..fireflies live in a land.
so, finally they got their land, but too bad, from 4 ships, only one ship still alive.
so after they arrived in that land, they burn their ship, with meaning, they dont want to go to anywhere. they want to stay in there.
so, that land till now is called "Bagan Siapi-api", the meaning is "bagan" is, a chart. chart ships.
siapi-api, Api is fire.
since then till now, they always celebrated that moment. in present, everybody who has a descendant from Bagan Siapi-api, they will come when for this celebration, dont care if they live in another province, another country or another continent. they will come.
every years when they celebrating this moment, Bagan siapi-api will be so crowded. 40,000-60,000 people will come.
the final moment of the Bakar Tongkang celebration is, they make an imitation of the ship, and they burn it.
such an expensive celebration. but they did that for every years
