This project comes from a deeply personal place: becoming a mother without the presence of my own. In that absence, I began recognizing fragments of motherhood in the women around me—in their care, quiet guidance, and the ways they showed up when I needed them most.
This portrait is part of an ongoing series about the women who shaped my understanding of motherhood through their presence and resilience. The woman portrayed in this work is Ibu Mamik, someone who endured violence and hardship earlier in her life, leaving visible traces on her face and body. Despite this, she continues to move through life with warmth, strength, and an enduring sense of care for others.
Using staged portraiture influenced by fashion photography and cinematic composition, approaching the image through gesture, styling, light, and color to create a space that feels intimate and dignified. This work reflects on resilience as a quiet, ongoing act of choosing tenderness after pain.
