Theyyam: When Man Becomes God
Theyyam is a 1,500-year-old ritual art of North Kerala, especially around Talipparamba, Kannur, and Kasaragod. A performer, after days of ritual prep, enters a trance and is believed to embody the deity. In fiery forms like Perumpuzhayachan and Gulikan, they dances through flames, symbolizing divine power. During the ritual, he blesses, hears grievances, and speaks as the god, dissolving caste barriers. Theyyam season runs October to May in village shrines. It’s not a performance about Gods it’s when humans become Gods.
