The white rhinoceros (often called the white rhino) is indeed one of the more vulnerable giants of Africa. While the southern white rhino population has recovered somewhat, they are still threatened by poaching and habitat loss. Mothers are especially protective — a calf will stay close to its mother for up to 2–3 years, often walking just ahead of her while she keeps a constant, watchful guard. If danger approaches, she will position herself between the threat and her calf without hesitation.
Seeing a mother–calf pair at Lake Nakuru must have been magical. That park, set within Great Rift Valley, is famous not only for rhinos but also for its sweeping landscapes and wildlife gatherings.
