Flies are one of the constant irritations faced by lions in the wild, especially in the hot savannahs of Africa. Drawn by the scent of sweat, blood, and open wounds from hunts or fights, these tiny insects swarm around the lions’ eyes, noses, and mouths, making it impossible for them to rest peacefully. Lions often twitch their skin, flick their tails, or shake their heads in frustration, but the relentless buzzing rarely stops. During the dry season, when water is scarce and carcasses are common, the number of flies increases dramatically, adding to the lions’ discomfort. Even this mighty predator of Masai Mara cannot escape these persistent pests — a reminder that in nature, no creature, however powerful, is free from life’s small annoyances. Photographed at Masai Mara , Kenya.
