This photograph captures a narrow corridor at the University of Colombo’s Faculty of Arts, its walls densely layered with poems, notes, and signatures left by students. Known colloquially as “Katapath Pawura,” this tradition draws inspiration from the ancient Sigiriya fortress’s mirror wall, where visitors once inscribed verse and commentary centuries ago. Here, in a modern academic setting, the spirit of collective expression lives on through handwritten reflections that transform the hallway into a living tapestry of thoughts.
The composition emphasizes strong contrasts between light and shadow: the corridor is relatively dark, its walls and floor cast in moody grayscale, while bright daylight spills in from the far end. This contrast highlights the silhouettes of a small group of individuals walking away from the camera, their figures framed by the luminous rectangle of the exit. The perspective of the shot, taken from within the tunnel-like space, draws the viewer’s eye along the length of the hallway toward the brightness outside, suggesting both physical and metaphorical transitions—moving from the confines of the written walls into the open.
Each side of the corridor is adorned with dense writing, reflecting the communal creativity of countless students. The words, sometimes arranged in clusters or scattered haphazardly, seem to compete for space, creating an organic pattern reminiscent of centuries-old graffiti traditions. The references to Sigiriya’s Katapath Pawura underscore the continuity of cultural practices in Sri Lanka, showing how a heritage of inscribed walls still resonates in contemporary academic life. Through this visually arresting image, I try to convey a sense of layered history, intellectual exploration, and the enduring power of the written word to connect people across time.
