Red Panda (Ailurus fulgens)
IUCN : EN
Red Pandas are small mammals native to Eastern Himalayas. Red Pandas are largely arboreal and solitary. They feed on the bamboo shoots and fruits.
They are threatened by poaching and habitat destruction.
I had been with a couple of Wildlife enthusiast friends to Singalila National Park which is on India Nepal border in Eastern Himalayas to see Red Pandas. Singalila National park ranges into 3 eco regions, temperate coniferous forests, temperate broadleaf and mixed forests and sub tropical coniferous forests.
This the best suited environment for Red Pandas to live.
Singalila NP ranges between 3000 to 4500 mtrs Above Sea level.
We had taken help of local guides who have experience in tracking and spotting Red Pandas. As they are arboreal and move on top of the large trees they are not easy to spot. The terrain is very steep to climb with 60 deg and 70 deg gradients and some days hikes ranged from 5- 10 kms taking up to couple of hours to reach the spot.
Pandas keep moving between the trees very fast and they are great climbers, This Panda started moving around climbing the tree.
