In ancient philosophy, four elements - earth, water, air, and fire - were considered the most basic components of the universe. These elements also resemble the four states of matter: solid, liquid, gas, and plasma.
The Atlantic Ocean’s cold Benguela Current carries dense polar water from the Antarctic regions up the southern African west coast, driven by the powerful south-easterly trade winds (air). It meets the Indian Ocean’s warm Agulhas Current, causing nutrient-rich upwellings and plankton bloom aided by the sun (fire). This exposure reflects the synergy of these four ancient elements - vital to the thriving of marine mammals, seabirds, and fish in this unique ecosystem of the Cape Peninsula, Western Cape. Batsata Reef and Maze, localized in False Bay, is a prime example of the thriving marine life of the Cape Peninsula.
