The Caretos of Lazarim are a very special carnival tradition in northern Portugal, specifically in the village of Lazarim, near Lamego.
The Caretos are male characters who wear hand-carved wooden masks, while the Senhorinhas are female characters. These masks are devoid of color to honor the art of those who carved them.
During the Lazarim Carnival, which lasts four days, the Caretos and Senhorinhas go out on the street, mingling with the crowd. The party includes an ethnographic parade, a mask contest, and the reading of the “will of the donkey”, a biting criticism made by the comadres (single girls) to the boys of the village.
