Looking at people in portraits, their faces and clothes, we sort of appropriate them. We can look at them as long as we want, we don’t hide our impertinent, shameless glances. They have no way to protect themselves from us.
We never think of this as a one-sided act, and possibly not an ethical one.
But what if one day people in portraits will hide behind masks making them anonymous, and start looking at us?
