The Kuarup funeral ritual begins immediately after the death of a family member. For about a year, the bereaved family is responsible for a series of ceremonies that involve the entire local community.
Marking the end of mourning, in the last two days, thousands of people gather to honor and celebrate the memory of the deceased with ceremonies that include songs, dances, body painting, Huka-huka fights and lots of stewed fish.Kuarup brings together nine peoples from the Upper Xingu who share the same traditions.
