The Pink Parade

Lake Natron, a hidden gem in Northern Tanzania hosts waters so caustic, so alkaline that it could burn skin. yet this deadly lake gives life to the flamingos. The high salinity and alkalinity means more food for the pink flurry, the very food that gives them their pink shade- Spirulina, a cyanobacteria that they filter from the mud. The caustic waters also act as a barrier from inland threats to them.
