Living among rubbish
26 July 2019
This Ghanaian child is one of many inhabitants of Accra´s landfills who live, eat, work, and relieve themselves on the land and amongst the waste.
The most polluted landfill in the world is in Accra, Ghana. Every day, one hundred tons of
electronic waste from Occident is burned at the Agbogbloshie landfill. Vapors of mercury, arsenic, and lead darken the sky and poison the air. Thousands of people have settled around
it, forming a marginal slum of unimaginable proportions. The area is also home to armed robbers, prostitutes, drug dealers and others involved in underground markets. Crime and disease run rampant. Kids who are not able to attend school often spend every evening and weekend processing waste searching for metals. This is the reality and the only way of life that children who wander every day in a sea of garbage.
