From the top to the schism
I had been wraping my head around dichotomies and what they can reflect on our condition as humans.
In the gap between opposites we can find beauty, ugliness, love, violence, comfort, emptiness. That makes us all, in a way, victims of the contrary and in the end it depends solely on us on which part of the scale we reside.
I wanted this image to show the relations between the female and the male, movement and stillness, beauty and violent energy; for it to be able to trigger the ideas that could lie in between each one of this dichotomies.
This was shot on a Rolleiflex SL66 that used to belong to my grandpa Ernesto + Kodak tri x 400 film. I used two continuos lights. The model had to fight against her eyes becoming watery because of the fans that were throwing air directly to her face. The hands that are flying around were actually there physically, so some shots were just not right because of the random position that the hands acquired with the air.
This photo was developed and enlarged by a lab here in Mexico with my supervision. Then I scanned it and added some digital elements in post for it to convey more dynamism between the male hands and the female expression, that is between her solemnity/stillness and the energy/movement of the hands. For me, the dichotomies in this photograph are not only in the image itself but in the film + digital solution.
