THE GATES OF HELL
The Masaya Volcano was known by the early Spanish Conquerors as "The Gates of Hell" because local natives made human sacrifices by throwing people into the flowing lava. It´s the main attraction at the Volcan de Masaya National Park where they let you drive right to the edge of the crater. For the night tour you can see the lava at its maximum splendor so you need to arrive at 5pm and wait for about two hours until they let you in. I shot this one from one of two lookouts where I set up my tripod right on the edge of an active volcano! I could hear the rumbling and feel the tremors from the boiling lava below.
