The Purbasthali Oxbow Lake — locally known as Chupi Char — is a riverine wetland formed by an abandoned channel of the Ganges/Bhagirathi River in Purba Bardhaman district, West Bengal. It has long been celebrated as a rich avian habitat, drawing hundreds of migratory and resident bird species every winter, thanks to its shallow waters and abundant food resources.
Among the many winter visitors, the Northern Pintail (Anas acuta) — a graceful, long-necked dabbling duck that breeds in northern Eurasia and winters across South Asia — is one of the notable migrants seen here. In recent seasons, birdwatchers and local guides have reported sightings and photographic captures of small groups of Northern Pintails gliding on the lake’s calm waters during the peak of the migratory period (typically December through February).
This species adds to the lake’s ecological diversity and highlights the importance of Purbasthali as a stopover and wintering ground along the Central Asian and South Asian flyways. The presence of pintails, along with other ducks and waders, not only delights birdwatchers but also serves as an indicator of the wetland’s health — reminding observers of the need to conserve such habitats amidst pressures from human activity and environmental change.
