The Tuberculate cuttlefish in this picture is native to South African waters. It is capable of changing colour, primarily for concealment. Acidification of the ocean is a particular threat to cuttlefish. It increases calcification in the cuttlebone and harms the cuttlefish's buoyancy structure. Its real name is “Beautiful Cuttlefish” and is appropriate due to its beautiful warty mantle and three-pronged cirri around its eyes. It can change colour and to blend in with its environment. It uses colour change to communicate especially during mating. These highly intelligent “Beautiful cuttlefishes” use tiny cells on the skin surface, filled with red, yellow and brown pigments, called chromatophores, to change colours in seconds.
