This photograph was captured at dawn during the sunrise over Shanghai in the early hours of July 9, 2026. I originally planned to shoot the morning glow after seeing promising forecasts for fiery sunrise clouds. However, an extremely violent thunderstorm—completely unforecasted on Windy—erupted across Shanghai starting at around 2 a.m., bringing fierce gales, torrential rain and constant lightning.
Still, I drove out to my pre-planned shooting location as scheduled. By sheer luck, I captured this once-in-a-lifetime frame. The base layer of the image features two lightning bolts intersecting the fiery cloudscape on the right, composited with three additional lightning shots via image stacking.
I am able to provide the original RAW files upon the judges’ request.
