Extinction Rebellion
Extinction Rebellion, London, August 2021
The environmental activist group Extinction Rebellion (XR) organised a two-week protest campaign in London, started on 23 th August. The group demanded that the government take greater action to address climate change. The campaign launched with a protest in Trafalgar Square. This year protesters intended to disrupt the City of London aiming to target larger investment banks and financial institutions. The group was demanding the Government stops investment in fossil fuels.
As part of the protests activists blocked the road in central London. More than 300 arrests have been made during the first week.
This global environmental movement was established in 2018 in UK with the stated aim of using nonviolent civil disobedience to compel government action to avoid tipping points in the climate system, biodiversity loss, and the risk of social and ecological collapse.
The group says that the life on Earth is in crisis and facing a mass extinction.
The three main demands XR have are:
• The government must declare a climate \"emergency\"
• The UK must legally commit to reducing carbon emissions to net zero by 2025
• A citizens\' assembly must be formed to \"oversee the changes\"
