By the late 16th century the Meteora monastic community included a total number of 24 active monasteries. By that time most of the small
hermitages, had almost been abandoned, since the new idea for the formation of larger monastic brotherhoods prevailed. The monasteries would
offer opportunities for the improvement of daily life conditions & the resolution of problems, mostly centred around the oppressive nature of
the Ottoman dominion & the harsh persecutions of Christians. In the mid-17th century the Meteora monastic community gradually started to decline.
Within the next 2 centuries many of the Monasteries & hermitages were totally ruined, either due to the destruction by the Ottomans, or they
were eventually abandoned by the monks &, thus, deserted. The long process of decline lasted until the early 20th century.
