Mongolia’s Altai Mountain Range is among the harshest and most inhospitable regions on earth. Here, bitter winds blow down from the steep peaks and across the barren plains, where only the most resilient flora and fauna are able to survive. Yet roughly 100 years ago, a small population of Kazakhs fled their homeland and crossed into this rugged part of Mongolia. They settled in Bayan-Ölgii, where they’ve stayed pretty much isolated ever since. I got this shot of Eagle Hunter Bazarbai while he was looking for a good spot to hunt. We were out on horseback for six hours in temperatures around -15C, and I took the picture while riding behind him.
