The tree-climbing lions of the Ndutu region, particularly around Lake Masek in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, are a specialized pride known for climbing acacia and fig trees to escape heat, avoid insects, and gain a better vantage point for hunting. Unlike the more famous Lake Manyara population, these lions are often seen in the Ndutu area, which becomes a prime, big-cat viewing location during the wildebeest calving season (January to March).
The Ndutu pride is large, with over 30 members, and can be seen in trees with adults, subadults, and cubs, making for a spectacular, rare, and memorable safari experience. They are often spotted during calving season.
These lions are not physically built for climbing but have developed this unique, learned behavior over time. They are often found lounging in branches, with their limbs dangling.
