The participants, known as Kukeri, donning elaborately crafted masks and costumes made from fur, feathers, and other materials. The purpose of wearing costumes and masks and performing special dances is to chase away evil spirits, bring good luck, and ensure a bountiful harvest for the upcoming year. Fire, music, and the loud noise of clappers, bells and drums have a special place in scaring away evil. The drummers are very important in the festival - they are setting the pace of the dances and the clappers and bells.
