In the early light of the wetland, two wood sandpipers erupt into a sudden territorial fight, their legs and bills tangling as each tries to overpower the other. Such brief but intense skirmishes decide access to prime feeding patches where insects and small invertebrates are abundant. Frozen at the peak of the fight, the photograph reveals the precision and agility that shape survival in the grass-fringed marsh. I could capture this precious moment at Manglajodi Wetlands in Orissa India, in January 2025, while attending a photo expedition there. Mangalajodi at present is one among the most notable wildlife conservation venture in India for birds of varied species.
