Once found all over Japan, Red Crowned Cranes population steadily declined due to habitat loss and overhunting and there was a time when they were declared to be extinct from Japan. Then in 1924, a dozen or so of them were found in the Kushiro region of Hokkaido and then started a massive conservation effort. Thanks to several conservation efforts to save the habitats, their population started growing again. The voluntary efforts of the villagers, notably Mr Ito Yoshitaka, who started feeding these Cranes and gradually their numbers who survived the harsh winters to breed in Spring increased. Ito, till his death was committed to protecting these Cranes and the Tsurui Ito Tancho Crane Sanctuary is today named after him.
